Korean Skincare: Is It Really Better, or Just Clever Marketing?

If you've spent any time on Instagram, TikTok, or wandered down the skincare aisle lately, you've probably heard the term "glass skin."

It's become one of the biggest beauty trends in the world. Smooth, glowing, almost reflective skin that looks healthy enough to shine without makeup.

The trend comes from Korean skincare, or K-Beauty, which has exploded in popularity over the last few years. But is it really that different to everything else? Is Korea genuinely leading the way in skincare, or has social media simply done a very good job of selling us another trend?

Like most things in the beauty world, the answer sits somewhere in the middle.

Why is Korean skincare so popular?

Korean skincare didn't become famous overnight.

For decades, the focus in Korea has been on preventing skin concerns rather than correcting them later. Instead of waiting for wrinkles, pigmentation or dryness to appear, the goal is to keep the skin healthy every single day.

That means focusing on things like hydration, protecting the skin barrier, wearing SPF, and using gentle ingredients consistently.

It's less about finding one miracle product, and more about building healthy skin over time.

That's something we can definitely get behind!

So... what exactly is "glass skin"?

Despite what social media sometimes suggests, glass skin isn't supposed to mean oily skin.

It's not about looking shiny because you've applied five layers of oil or highlighter.

Glass skin is really just another way of describing skin that is:

  • Well hydrated

  • Smooth in texture

  • Even in tone

  • Healthy and balanced

  • Naturally radiant

When your skin is functioning well, it reflects light more evenly, giving it that fresh, luminous look people associate with "glass skin."

In many ways, it's less of a trend and more of a reflection of healthy skin.

What Korean skincare gets right

There are a lot of things we love about the Korean approach to skincare.

Hydration is prioritised, the skin barrier is protected rather than constantly stripped with harsh products, gentle exfoliation is favoured over aggressive treatments.

And perhaps most importantly, there's a real understanding that consistency beats intensity.

Healthy skin isn't created by one facial or one expensive serum. It's the little things you do regularly that make the biggest difference.

But here's where we think people get a little carried away...

One of the biggest misconceptions about Korean skincare is that you need a 10 or 12-step routine to see results. In reality, most people don't.

In the clinic, we often find that clients are using too many products rather than too few.

Layering active ingredient after active ingredient can actually leave the skin irritated, dehydrated, and confused.

More products doesn't always mean better skin. Often it's about using the right products, in the right order, for your skin.

A simple, consistent routine that supports your skin barrier will almost always outperform an overflowing bathroom cabinet full of products you don't really need.

Can you achieve "glass skin" without Korean skincare?

Absolutely!

The products can certainly help, but they're only one piece of the puzzle.

Professional treatments, good hydration, gentle exfoliation, facial massage, quality skincare, adequate sleep, nutrition, and protecting your skin from the sun all play a role.

In fact, many of the results people admire in Korean skincare are exactly what we're trying to achieve in the treatment room every day.

Our Nourish Facial focuses on deeply hydrating and strengthening the skin, while treatments like our Infusion Facial are designed to replenish moisture, calm the skin, and leave it looking healthy, plump, and radiant.

The goal isn't to make your skin just look shiny.

The goal is to make it healthy enough that it naturally glows.

Our take?

We love that Korean skincare has encouraged people to think differently about skin health. It's shifted the conversation away from harsh treatments and quick fixes, and towards hydration, prevention, and caring for your skin for the long term.

At the same time, it's important not to get caught up chasing every trend that pops up on social media.

Beautiful skin doesn't come from copying someone else's routine, it comes from understanding your own skin, being consistent, and choosing products and treatments that are right for you.

Sometimes, less really is more.

Let's settle the debate...

There's no right or wrong answer, and we'd genuinely love to know what you prefer!

After a facial treatment, would you rather leave with:

  • Glowing, dewy "glass skin"

  • Soft, hydrated skin with little to no shine
